Thomas Schnelldorfer is a Professor of Surgery and Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tufts University. He is a board-certified, dual fellowship-trained surgical oncologist, who is a nationally renowned specialist in the care of gastric and pancreatic cancer. Dr. Schnelldorfer’s academic interest includes computer vision and development of label-free laparoscopic sensors and its application for operative detection of occult cancer. He is the Director of the Surgical Imaging Lab at Tufts Medical Center; an NIH-funded lab focusing on translational research with integration of novel operative imaging techniques into everyday practice. As a result, Tufts Medical Center is currently only one of very few centers in the U.S. able to offer intra-operative imaging technologies to patients for detection of otherwise not visible cancer metastases; an approach that is expected to improve surgical care for many patients with various cancers.
